The amygdala is the primary sensory consolidation and emotional processor of the brain, and it is present in all vertebrates. Although technically residing in the temporal lobe, it is a part of the limbic system, and can process events much faster than the deeply folded outer lobes. Thanks to its position between the hippocampus and hypothalamus, it can associate a stimulus with fear or any other emotion and respond accordingly, even before our conscious mind is aware of it. The amygdala of the deer creates no less legitimate of an experience than a human's.
