"Georgina" is inspired by Sargent’s mastery of light and shadow portraying the artist’s eldest daughter for the first time. At sixteen Georgina stands between the dark memories of her homeland and the radiant possibilities of a new life. Though she glances back with suspicion and hesitation her downcast gaze reflects the weight of leaving the familiar behind. A faint tentative smile suggests her growing awareness that the future may hold a sweetness stronger than past bitterness.
