CHRIS ROLL
FROM THE ARTIST
"Originally from Upstate New York, I moved to Lakeland 14 years ago to pursue a career as a high school art teacher and have also served as an instructor at the Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art for over a decade. My original oil paintings explore the theme of Conversations in Passing, capturing fleeting, ambiguous moments inspired by candid photography and interpreted through a blend of alla prima and glazing techniques. Influenced by Edward Hopper’s quiet realism and Caravaggio’s dramatic use of light, I aim to evoke narrative depth while inviting viewers to draw their own meanings from each scene. My process is rooted in classical figure painting and limited color palettes, emphasizing anatomical accuracy, spontaneity, and the illusion of form. Ultimately, my work seeks to preserve the subtle complexity of modern life and create a space for visual dialogue between the painting and the viewer."
FROM NOTTA GALLERY
Chris Roll has been an abundant source of inspiration throughout his partnership with Notta Gallery. The curation of his consignments within our space is done with such ease, since his body of work is so strongly - and organically - cohesive. Roll's aptitude for capturing the human figure and the depth of a space is truly captivating.
Informed by memory, reflection, and emotion, Roll processes and conveys his lived experiences through his paintings. In each of his works, viewers are led to feel as if they had procured the memory for themselves.
